The purpose of this class is to service students who have previously not been successful on their 8th grade English STAAR, or English 1 or 2 EOC. The students will read various texts in class focusing on skills such as vocabulary, making inferences, author's purpose, main idea, summarization, and drawing conclusions. The students will mainly work on a web based reading program called Achieve 3000 that also focuses on these skills using nonfiction text.
Achieve3000 is a computer-based reading program that reaches every student at his or her own level. Your child will receive reading materials that are not too easy nor too difficult, but are at just the right level to help increase his/her literacy skills and to prepare for college and career.
Research has shown that students best develop their reading skills when they work with text that is matched to their independent reading level. With Achieve3000, all students in the class may, at times, read the same lesson, but the difficulty is precisely matched to each individual student's reading level. In order to determine the student's reading level, they will take a test 3 times a year to track their lexile (reading ability) level.
